The Commissioner of Revenue's mission is to provide Arlington County residents and businesses high quality service in meeting their tax obligations by applying Virginia state and Arlington County tax laws with uniformity, fairness, and integrity.
|"When customers call us, they are not interrupting our busy workday; they are the reason we are here!"|
As a result of the storm damage experienced by many residents, the Commissioner of Revenue is issuing a reprint of an article published in the Citizen Newsletter earlier this year:
Don’t Be Swindled by Dishonest Contractors and Vendors. Considering hiring a contractor in Arlington? The Commissioner of Revenue’s Customer Advocate can help you ensure that the contractor you are considering is complying with the County’s legal requirements.
The Customer Advocate has direct access to the appropriate State and County records and can save you from having to spend hours online or on the telephone. You can quickly find out if a contractor has a business license with the County, or a state contractors’ license with Virginia. You can learn whether the door-to-door vendor who offers to trim your trees or make home repairs has a vendor’s permit from the Arlington County Police Department. Just call or email the Customer Advocate for information that can help protect you from fraud. There is no charge for this service.
Of course, knowing that contractors and vendors are in compliance with the law does not guarantee the quality of their work. But it is a first step in determining their level of responsibility. It’s always a good idea to use referrals and get references before hiring anyone.

The 2012 tax rate is $5.00 per $100 of assessed value. Vehicles are assessed for the number of months they are located in Arlington County.
For 2012, qualifying conventional fuel vehicles will receive tax relief in the following way: The first $3,000 in annual assessed value is fully subsidized by the State; the next $17,000 in annual assessed value, from $3,001 - $20,000, is subsidized at 30%; annual assessed value above $20,000 is not subsidized.
n April 16, 2011 with the Commissioner’s support and encouragement, the Arlington County Board adopted a measure to offer enhanced personal property tax relief (PPTRA) for vehicles specially adapted to transport individuals with disabilities. Whether a vehicle qualifies for this tax relief will be determined by the Commissioner of Revenue and her staff based on the following criteria:
For those vehicles that do qualify, the 2012 tax rate will include 100% tax relief on vehicle values up to $3,000 and 50% tax relief on vehicle values from $3,001 to $20,000. Vehicle values over $20,000 will receive no tax relief.
In support of Arlington's Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE), clean fuel vehicles will receive 100% tax relief on the first $3,000 of the vehicle's value and 60% tax relief on the next $17,000 of the vehicle's value, from $3,001 - $20,000. The portion of a qualifying vehicle’s assessed value over $20,000 is not tax exempt.

A new “Assessment & Collections Enterprise” (ACE) system has been adopted in the Commissioner of Revenue’s and Treasurer’s Offices. The ACE project was initiated to replace the processes previously supported by the County’s aging mainframe-based revenue systems. Benefits of the new system include more efficient processes, fewer errors, increased reliability, and most importantly, improved customer service.
The new Customer Assessment and Payment Portal (CAPP) is an important component of the ACE system. For the first time, all Arlington taxpayers will be able to file, pay, and monitor their accounts through a new portal website. Businesses and citizens will have full access to view the status of all their accounts, perform routine transactions, update account information, and review account history – all at the citizen’s own convenience, online, in a secure environment.
Need to pay your tax bills, your utility bill, a parking ticket? Do it through your CAPP account.
Bought a car, sold a car, have a new email address? Handle it all through your CAPP account.
Want to sign up for Billpayer Notification Service or the Automated Bank Debit Program? Available through your CAPP account.
Want to review your Arlington tax assessment or payment history? It’s there in your CAPP account.
Need to file your business account returns or review information with your accountant? Yep! Do it through your CAPP account.
