Construction

The work has been contracted to a County bridge contractor. The repair schedule is weather-dependent but is expected to be completed in 60 days or less. During this time, the bridge will be closed to use and pedestrians are advised to use alternative routes. Options include crossing the stream at Shirlington Road to the east, or S. Walter Reed Drive to the west.

About the Project

Project Goals

  • Remove existing decking boards and replace with new pressure-treated pine decking boards.
  • Repaint metal surfaces with green and gray paint to match colors used within Jennie Dean Park.

Background

The pedestrian bridge within Jennie Dean Park that lies at the south end of S. Nelson Street and crosses Four Mile Run at S. Arlington Mill Drive is a heavily used bridge that serves many community members and park users. The decking boards have become worn and rotted. Temporary repairs have been made to keep the bridge open and passable.
