  1. How many days a week do participants attend?
The Walter Reed ADHC center is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with core hours from 10a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Participants in the program agree, upon admission, to attend a minimum of 2 days per week.  During intake, staff will advise to the days per week currently open for new admissions.

  3. Is transportation provided?
No.  Participants and families are welcome to arrange their own transportation, Arlington County offers subsidized transportation through  Arlington STAR a subsidiary of MetroAccess.
  1. How soon can my family member start attending the Walter Reed ADHC? A full assessment is necessary before anyone can begin attending the center.  The first step is to set up and complete an intake appointment.  During this appointment, the potential participant is present at the center with at least one caregiver/family member.  At the intake, staff share specifics about the schedule and structure of the program and gather information regarding past and present medical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs. The center’s Mental Health Therapist and a Recreation Specialist assess the potential participant’s needs and abilities in order to decide if they can properly be served by this program. The second step is for the potential participant to have an updated physical exam and tuberculosis screening. Due to licensing regulations, both of these must be completed within 30 days before the participant is accepted to the program. Once the physical and tuberculosis screening are complete, the last step is for the family/caregiver to schedule a home visit with the center’s nurse.  This home visit allows the nurse to explain the medical policies of the center, to assess the potential participant’s level of competency in activities of daily living, and to develop rapport between the participant and another staff member.

  2. How many people attend the Walter Reed ADHC? Is there a waiting list?
On average, 35 participants are scheduled to attend per day. Participants are able to receive personal help and assistance in addition to participating in group activities with other participants and staff.

Due to licensing regulations limiting the number of participants here daily, we occasionally have to put potential participants on a waiting list before they start attending the Walter Reed ADHC. All potential participants need to complete the intake interview and physical exam/tb screening before they can be placed on the waiting list.

  1. What do participants do during the day at Walter Reed ADHC?
Activities vary throughout the day and the week. Elements occurring everyday include exercise, activity groups, lunch, independent time, and snack. Two specialized activity periods occur every day with up to 5 different options available during each period. Participants also attend special events each month taking place both within and outside of the center (e.g. nature walks, field trips, etc.).

  2. My family member does not speak English.  Can he/she still attend the center?
As the purpose of this Center is to provide high quality, daytime services to adults with physical or memory impairments living in this community, all Arlington County residents, including non-English speakers, are welcome to attend. In order to fully provide for the necessities and safety of the individual while at the center, some communication is necessary. Suggestions normally include using body language or making staff aware of native words the participant would use to express needs regarding hunger, thirst, pain, or toileting. In terms of participation in groups, many activities at the center do not require verbal speech in order to participate.
