Dog Park Sponsor Groups Request Rules Changes for Community Canine Areas

children with dogArlington County loves its kids...and its dogs. Arlington's Canine Community Areas (CCA) are highly successful community gathering spots where dog owners can safely exercise and socialize their pets off-leash.

Arlington's Canine Community Area rules currently allow children of all ages to be in the park but state that "parents must be in control of their children at all times in a CCA." These parks are managed jointly with various park sponsor groups, Arlington Dogs and county staff. In February 2011, two of the CCA sponsor groups asked the County to change the rule so that young children (under eight) not be allowed in Canine Community Areas, and children 8-14 only be allowed if they are being supervised by an adult.

After review it was decided not to change this park rule and instead increase public education and compliance with the existing rules.  The goal is to have parents keep a close eye on their children to ensure they are under direct supervision at all times.
