Arlington's Continuum of Care Awarded $2.8 Million in HUD Funding

ARLINGTON, VA - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded more than $2.8 million in FY 2021 Continuum of Care (CoC) Competition Awards to Arlington. The awards will provide funding to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness move into permanent housing with access to supportive services, with the overarching goal of long-term stability.

"Access to stable housing is a basic necessity – the safety of a home is essential, especially as we continue to fight the COVID-19 virus," said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. "These Continuum of Care program grants, coupled with the historic resources in the American Rescue Plan, will deliver communities the resources needed to ensure that every person in a respective community has the equitable opportunity to a safe and stable home."

Arlington County’s Department of Human Services is the lead agency for the Arlington Continuum of Care and is responsible for preparing and submitting the annual CoC application to HUD. Program areas within the CoC include street outreach and engagement, shelter diversion and targeted prevention, shelters, rapid re-housing, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing.

Arlington’s continued success in securing HUD grant funding – and its success in addressing homelessness in the County – is a product of the Continuum of Care’s coordinated strategy, as spelled out in the Action Plan for Ending Homelessness.

"Our commitment to ending homelessness relies heavily on best-practices such as a strong prevention program, using the housing first model, addressing racial disparities through equity-focused services, and building and maintaining strong partnerships throughout the CoC," said Anita Friedman, Department of Human Services Director. "It’s rewarding to get this kind of validation for our work, and we will put the funding to good use."

About HUD CoC Funding

The CoC program is designed to promote a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. The program is the largest source of federal grant funding for homeless services and housing programs servicing people experiencing homelessness and, for Arlington’s CoC, includes funding for rapid re-housing, permanent supportive housing, and various activities associated with the effective implementation and coordination of CoC activities.

Tree Canopy Study Shows Modest Gains

A new, high-accuracy study of 2023 tree canopy data, and analysis of 2018 and 2014 data, reveals a steady increase in Arlington’s tree canopy, with work remaining to reestablish and maintain at least 40% tree canopy Countywide.
