Arlington's big fall cleanup and drop-off day takes place Saturday, Oct. 8, at Wakefield High School from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school parking lot at 1325 South Dinwiddie Street.

The Arlington Environmental Collection and Recycling Event (E-CARE) is a biannual pop-up event that gives residents a one-stop opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household materials (HHMs) and old electronics that have accumulated over the summer or even through the years.

This will be the first E-CARE held at Wakefield. To streamline traffic flow, metal items and bicycle donations will not be accepted during this event. Access the drop-off route from South Columbus Street at South George Mason Drive. (See map)

HHMs are familiar home products that are flammable, corrosive, poisonous or otherwise potentially harmful. They include paints, automotive fluids, fluorescent light bulbs, household cleaners, batteries, and propane gas cylinders.

The list of accepted materials collected at E-CARE is available online along with a list of unacceptable items. Residents should place all materials in the original container, if possible, or label them clearly. Any leaking containers should be inside an extra protective layer.

Pro tip: Pack your vehicle in reverse order of E-CARE drop-off stations to make unloading go faster. Electronics go in firstfollowed by HHMs. In addition, talk to neighbors in advance to combine loads and save trips to the drop-off site.

E-CARE is for Arlington residents only. Bring photo ID or a utility bill to confirm proof of residence. Business and commercial waste will not be accepted at the event.

While E-CARE does not require parking for drop-offs, spaces at Wakefield and the surrounding area will be extremely limited on Oct. 8 due to sporting events scheduled for the school’s fields.

Year-round disposal options for hazardous household materials as well as electronics, metals, appliances and other items can be found on the County website.
