Arlington County Seeks Great Design Nominations

Arlington County's biennial design awards program, DESIGNArlington, is now accepting submissions for great design in new construction, renovations, additions or adaptive re-use projects. Established in 2009, DESIGNArlington seeks to highlight excellence and diversity in the County's built environment.

Residents, property owners, developers, architects and other members of the design community may submit an entry now through Dec. 1.

Eligible projects must have been completed since 2000 and may fall into any number of categories:

• Residential (single- and multi-family)


• Commercial


• Institutional/Civic


• Historic Preservation/Building Rehabilitation


• Public Art


• Open Space (plazas/parks/streetscapes)

The 2017 Call for Entries can be downloaded from the County's website for detailed information about the awards process, submission requirements and an entry form. Submissions must be received by the County by 5 p.m., Friday, December 1, 2017, for consideration in the 2017 DESIGNArlington Awards Program.

An independent jury of architecture, urban design, historic preservation, public art and landscape design professionals will review all nominations and select several winners. Winners will be announced by early 2018. Examples of previous winners include The Maxwell, Rocky Run Park, The Hyde and Wakefield High School.

DESIGNArlington is a biennial awards program established by the County Board to recognize and inspire excellent design in Arlington County by showcasing distinctive architecture of new and renovated buildings and well-designed public art and landscape projects.

DESIGNArlington is administered by the Arlington County Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development's Center for Urban Design & Research, which was established to elevate the discussion of design throughout the community and educate people on the social and economic value of high-quality urban environments.
