ART Bus Fare Collection, Front Door Boarding Resumes Jan. 3

Published on December 29, 2020

All Arlington Transit (ART) buses will resume front door boarding and fare collection on Sunday, Jan. 3. Riders will board buses through the front door and pay their fares at the fare box using a SmarTrip card, exact change, or the new SmarTrip app.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fare collection on ART buses was suspended in March and riders were asked to board through the rear doors to protect the health and safety of bus operators and riders. Plexiglass barriers have now been installed in the driver area on all ART buses to provide a shield between bus operators and passengers as they resume boarding in the front of the bus.

The regular ART bus fare for a one-way trip is $2.00, with discounted fares for senior citizens, people with disabilities and K-12 students. All passengers are required to wear a face mask while riding ART buses.

WATCH: Sanitation and Safety on ART Buses

Arlington Transit continues to make sure passengers and bus operators are safe. The following measures continue to be in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • ART buses are deep cleaned every day, with approved disinfectants, by wiping down all poles, handrails, passenger seats, windows and all components in the driver's area.

  • The HVAC system is sanitized with a cleaning agent designed to kill germs and prevent them from being recirculated in the bus.

  • Signs are placed on seats to block them off to encourage social distancing between passengers.

  • When needed, additional ART buses are placed into service to prevent crowding on the buses.

All passengers are asked to social distance on the buses and at bus stops.
