Speaking from a safe social distance, the Arlington County Board opened its Tuesday, March 24, meeting with a report on the status of the County Government and community response to COVID-19.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the routines and rhythms of our lives here in Arlington, across Virginia and indeed the globe," said Board Chair Libby Garvey. "I think we all know now that life is not going to get back to normal for some time."

Garvey and Board Members Christian Dorsey, Matt de Ferranti and Katie Cristol each provided brief updates on a range of topics, both directly related to the COVID-19 response and also the ancillary effects. Topics included:

• Social distancing and abiding by community closures to avoid overwhelming hospitals and medical facilities


• Economic impacts in Arlington, including resources for small businesses and for people who have lost their jobs or income


• What individuals can do to help keep everyone safe


• How people can take care of themselves, their loved ones, and their community during this time


• What the County is doing to help people in need, including housing security and domestic violence services

Board members also commended the County's public health staff and other departments who have been working 24 hours a day to respond to the pandemic.
