More Online Permitting Coming to Arlington in February

Published on February 17, 2023

Arlington County is expanding Permit Arlington, its online permitting system, on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, when Certificate of Occupancy applications and inspections will move into the online system.

"Certificates of Occupancy are an important addition to Permit Arlington because they are often the last step in the permitting process for both residential and commercial projects," said Arlington County Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development Director Claude Williamson. "After this launch, all land development permits, applications, and inspections will be available through a single, online system, bringing more consistency to the permitting process for our customers."

Permit Arlington initially launched in 2019 to improve the customer experience for permitting, building and land development services. With this latest addition, all permits and applications will have moved from paper applications and in-person payments to the online system, eliminating the need for customers to visit County offices to complete these transactions.

Virtual Open Houses

To assist the public with this phase of Permit Arlington, the County is hosting two virtual open houses, one before the launch and one shortly after. These open houses are an opportunity for customers to hear about changes to the Certificate of Occupancy process, find out what steps to take to prepare, and ask questions. The virtual open houses will be held:

About Permit Arlington

Permit Arlington is a County-wide initiative to improve the processes that support permitting, building and land development. Customers can apply online for permits 24 hours a day, seven days a week from their computer or mobile device. They also can upload plans, drawings and supporting documents and track the progress of their applications. In addition, the new system sends email notifications as an application clears the following bars: receipt, completeness check, approval, receipt of payment and permit issuance. Customers may download their permits from the Permit Arlington customer portal once they are issued and can print them remotely for display at project sites.
