Arlington Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Tribute Event
Published on January 10, 2024
Arlington will commemorate the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute event on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Wakefield High School. The celebration will include a vibrant mix of music, dance, and spoken word performances.
"Stones of Hope" Tribute
This year’s tribute, titled "Stones of Hope," draws inspiration from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC, dedicated in 2011. The event will showcase snapshots of Dr. King’s life, with performances reflecting each of the 14 poignant quotes from the memorial that encapsulate his enduring impact.
Arlington’s tradition of honoring Dr. King dates to 1968, following his assassination. The program aims to unite the community in support of social justice and harmony. This program is brought together by Arlington County staff led by the Department of Parks and Recreation in partnership with Arlington Public Schools. It is produced in collaboration with Encore Stage & Studio and directed by Madaline Y. Langston. The script is penned by local resident Anne Smith and the program supported by this year’s MLK Tribute Planning Committee – Cleveland James, Kim Roberts, Kayla Hunt, Saundra Green, and Susan Kalish.
