County’s AIRE Team Tracks Progress Toward Carbon Neutrality

The Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE) has released its second annual “ACCELERATE” report, illustrating the County’s award-winning efforts to make a more sustainable community through buildings, resilience, renewable energy, transportation, government activities, and education and behavioral change.

From investing in on-site renewables for powering County facilities to leading participation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Building Challenge, progress has been built through the County’s Community Energy Plan Roadmap Years 1-2.

"ACCELERATE” features Arlington’s core work pertaining to energy, climate, and the environment, and reflects a multi-sector, cross-disciplinary approach that generates an all-of-government commitment to a sustainable, dynamic future. Highlights for 2023 include achievement of LEED Platinum Cities status and a Zero Emissions Bus study and transition plan. View the report through the County’s website.

Comparable Metrics Dashboard

To reinforce the advancement of the County’s operations on a variety of energy and sustainability performance metrics, and to serve as a public information resource, the County published a Comparable Metrics Dashboard for Arlington and other local jurisdictions.

This reference tool displays comparative metrics on buildings, renewables, County government operations, transportation, and behavioral change and market transformation. Sources can be found on the AIRE Reports page.

Through the AIRE program, Arlington is on the way to achieving its 2050 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for carbon neutrality.
