At its July 2024 Recessed Board meeting, the Arlington County Board appointed Mr. Mason Kushnir to serve as its Clerk. He will act as the Board’s official record keeper, managing all Board meetings, work sessions, and changes to the County Code. The Clerk to the County Board also serves as its principal staff officer, overseeing all day-to-day staff operations of the County Board Office.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to step into the role of Clerk to the County Board after eight years in this office,” said Mr. Kushnir. “Public service has always been my passion, and I am committed to supporting the Board and our dedicated staff to ensure we are equipped to meet our community's evolving needs. We'll keep working hard, embracing new ideas, and doing our best every day to serve the people of Arlington."

Mr. Kushnir has worked in the Arlington County Board Office since 2016, starting as an aide to former Board member Katie Cristol, handling constituent services, liaising with county advisory groups, and assisting the member’s work as well as supporting the County Board Office as a whole. In 2019, he was promoted to Deputy Clerk of the Board where he provided critical oversight in legal, technical and administrative requirements for Board meetings and operations. In his capacity as Deputy Clerk, he led efforts to digitize decades of historical records and helped manage the development of the office’s new constituent relationship management system.

“Mason was an excellent and exciting addition to the County Board Office years ago. Year after year, he has filled and mastered nearly every role and responsibility in our office,” Chair Libby Garvey said. “The Board is delighted to have him now serve as our Clerk. He has the experience, skillset, and drive to continue to improve our office’s public service to the County.”

Originally from Texas and hailing most recently from New Mexico, Mr. Kushnir moved to Virginia in 2014 to pursue a career in public service after earning a B.A. in Political Science from Texas A&M University and serving on a number of state and local campaigns. An avid outdoorsman and bicycling enthusiast, Mason often enjoys commuting to work using Arlington’s network of bike routes, such as the Washington, Old Dominion, and Mount Vernon trails. He lives in South Arlington with his wife, Sarah, and their two beagles, Sam and Ruby.
