Shorter daylight hours in the fall and winter mean reduced visibility on many parts of our roads.

With the end of daylight saving time this Sunday, Nov. 3, it’s especially important to be extra vigilant while driving in dark conditions. Arlington’s Vision Zero traffic safety team notes that pedestrian crashes in the dark are twice as likely to happen between the months of October-February.

Everyone should keep safety in mind when traveling around Arlington, whether it’s driving, biking, scooting or walking to your usual destinations or to different seasonal events and activities. Here are a few tips on how to travel safely this fall:

  • Be Alert: Always be on the lookout for people crossing the road as you drive.
  • Go the Speed Limit: Slower speeds increase driver reaction time and reduce crash risk.
  • Be Predictable and Visible: When crossing the road as a pedestrian or on a bike/scooter, use a crosswalk for better visibility.

Drive Sober: It is illegal to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (or drugs).
