Coffee and Conversation
Everyone is invited to join the conversation via Zoom. Bring your own coffee, learn interesting things about our community and hear from the speakers listed below. Learn about Arlington Neighborhood Village, how to become a member and volunteer opportunities.
August 3rd: Working to address mental health disorders that may lead to self-harm or violence to others, PRS is a nonprofit based in Northern Virginia. Lauren Padgett, Director of Resource Development, will talk about how the organization provides behavioral health, crisis intervention and suicide prevention services. Their vision is to change and save lives by empowering hope, safety, recovery, wellness, independence and community integration.
August 10th: Northern Virginia Senior Olympics celebrates 40 years of physical and mental fitness challenges starting September 10, 2022. Herb Levitan, NVSO Chair, will tell us about the incredible range of 77 events open to seniors (50+) - from billiards and crosswords to swimming, running, biking and even pickleball. Learn more, volunteer, or register to compete at NVSO.us.
August 17th: Greg Emanuel, Director of Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services, will tell us about the rewards and challenges of managing one of the largest departments. Environmental Services addresses everything from Arlington's water utility, stormwater, sewers, transportation, trash and recycling programs, and capital plans for a more sustainable community environment.
August 24th: Hamkae Center (formerly NAKASEC Virginia) has been organizing with Asian American communities in Northern Virginia for the past 10 years. Director Sookyung Oh will tell us about the organization's history and purpose. Hamkae means "together" in Korean, which says a lot about how we think constructive change will happen and the beautiful diversity among Asian American communities. Ms. Oh will lead an interactive conversation that describes the Center's work in organizing, leadership development, grassroots policy advocacy, services, and civic engagement.
August 31st: Zero proof cocktails! You’ll find new options at cafes, social events, and on grocery shelves. ANV’s own Gary Eiserman will tell us about the exploding popularity of non-alcoholic adult beverages. We hope to Zoom into Gary’s kitchen as he shows us how to mix up ingredients for delicious drinks.
