The Park and Recreation Commission has supported the importance of recognizing biophilia; the recent, science-based understanding of the importance of nature for a community’s health, happiness, and economic and environmental sustainability. In December, 2019 the County Board passed a resolution declaring the intention to join the Biophilic Cities Network. In March, 2020 Arlington County was accepted as a member of the Network. The following papers share background and discussion of the principles of biophilia and the importance of applying them to all of our planning and design efforts in developing private and public projects.
