Sequential Intercept Model

The Sequential Intercept Model is a nationally recognized framework conceptualizing the linear movement of people with mental illness through the criminal justice system and is intended to address the over-representation of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

Arlington uses a criminal justice Sequential Intercept Model approach for diverting individuals with serious behavioral health issues into treatment and out of incarceration. The model includes five intercepts:

  • Intercept 1: Law Enforcement/Mental Health Emergency Services
  • Intercept 2 and 2.5: Initial Detention/Initial Court Hearings
  • Intercept 3: Jails/Courts
  • Intercept 4: Re-entry
  • Intercept 5: Community Corrections/Community Support
