Gretchen Reinemeyer

General Registrar

The Arlington County Electoral Board appointed Gretchen Reinemeyer as General Registrar/Director of Elections for Arlington County in 2019. Gretchen started working in elections as a poll worker in Texas when she was 18. She started her career in public service as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the King County Housing Authority in Seattle.

Gretchen joined the staff of the Office of Voter Registration as a seasonal employee in 2008. In 2011, Gretchen became an Assistant Registrar before becoming the Election Specialist and, eventually, Deputy Registrar in 2012. The Office of Voter Registration, where she serves as chief administrator, is responsible for maintaining Arlington’s list of registered voters and conducting elections.

Since 2011, Gretchen has served two separate terms as co-chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (MWCOG) Election Officials Technical Committee. The Committee is comprised of election administrators from jurisdictions in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. She is also active in the Voter Registrars’ Association of Virginia (VRAV). In addition, Gretchen has observed international elections with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Gretchen earned her master’s degree in Anthropology from George Mason University and holds a bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She is Virginia Registered Election Official (VREO) and Certified Election/Registration Administrator (CERA) certified. Gretchen lives in South Arlington, and in her spare time, enjoys hiking, volunteering, and traveling.
