Arlington 2050

The Arlington 2050 Initiative was announced by Chair Garvey at the Arlington County Board’s January 2024 Organizational meeting and was a year-long effort to engage neighbors across Arlington on what the County should look like by the year 2050.

Residents were asked to fill out a "Postcard from the Future" where they were asked to imagine they lived in Arlington in 2050 and then to write to themselves in the Arlington of today, in 2024. They were then asked to describe what was so great about their “ideal” Arlington in 2050. Both physical and digital postcards were provided, and over 1300 Arlingtonians participated. Engagements methods included:

  • Relational meetings with community leaders

  • Postcard collection from 24 locations (libraries, community pop-ups, and online)

  • Feedback from commissions and advisory groups

  • Listening sessions

  • High School Learning Projects

A presentation on this work was provided to the Board at the December 17, 2024, Recessed Board Meeting.
