Dr. Leonard Muse

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C. surrounded by his family; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse co-founded in 1952 the Green Valley Pharmacy with his friend and colleague, Mr. Waverly Jones, in order to provide high-quality service to the African American community in Arlington; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse, and Mr. Jones, were the first known African American pharmacists in Arlington County and the pharmacy is one of the oldest continuously owned and operated pharmacies in the County; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse in 1955 became the sole owner and proprietor of the Green Valley Pharmacy for 65 years of operation; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse, during a time of racial segregation in Arlington County, created a community gathering spot at the Green Valley Pharmacy which played a significant role in fostering relationships among neighbors of all races and ages; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Leonard Muse continues today to serve as an example of compassion and sharing through his personal involvement and commitment to the community and lives of its residents;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, on September 19, 2017, do commend

LEONARD “DOC” MUSE

and call upon Arlingtonians to recognize him for his more than six decades of dedicated and caring services that he brought to the citizens of Nauck and Arlington County.
