Older Americans Month

WHEREAS, May is the month in which we pay special tribute to the 29,716 Arlington residents age 60 and over through education and information that encourages increased community awareness of older Americans, knowledge of older Americans’ significant contributions and concerns, and an opportunity to focus on the unity of older Americans’ concerns for a better quality of life; and

WHEREAS, the President of the United States and the Governor of Virginia have established May 2016 as Older Americans Month and marks a renewed focus on “Blazing the Trail,” in acknowledgement of raising awareness about issues facing older adults helping all individuals to thrive in communities of their choice for as long as possible; and

WHEREAS, we appreciate the contributions of older residents of Arlington and their determination to remain engaged in our community, volunteering to contribute their time, wisdom and experience toward making Arlington a better place; and

WHEREAS, Arlington County is committed to helping all individuals live longer, healthier, and safer lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Libby Garvey, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim May 2016, as

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

in Arlington County, and urge all residents to take part in activities and observances designed to celebrate this occasion which recognizes the significant contributions of our older Americans.
