VETERANS DAY

WHEREAS, Veterans Day is a day intended to honor and thank all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The men and women who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard; and

WHEREAS, the signing of the armistice ending World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, has been observed by the Country for over 100 years, first as Armistice Day and now as Veterans Day; and

WHEREAS, Congress, in 1954, passed Public Law 380 formally changing Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day to expand the significance of the existing holiday in order that a grateful nation, on a day dedicated to the cause of world peace, may pay proper homage to all its veterans who have contributed so much to the cause of peace and the preservation of our way of life; and

WHEREAS, Arlington County is the home of an estimated 13,000 veterans, Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, many other military installations and the employer of many veterans, the people of Arlington feel a special connection to Veterans Day and its honorees;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christian Dorsey, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2019, as

VETERANS DAY

in Arlington County and urge all residents to recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of Veterans to the cause of world peace.
