Women’s History Month

WHEREAS, women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of Arlington County, Virginia, our nation, and the global community; and

WHEREAS American women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement, working towards a fairer and more just society for all; and

WHEREAS, these achievements have been critical to the growth and development of our economy, our cultural and artistic impact, our social advancement, and all areas of accomplishment; and

WHEREAS, despite these contributions, the role of American women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued, in the literature, teaching and study of American history; and

WHEREAS, the 2017 National Women’s History Month theme, “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business,” honors women who have successfully challenged the role of women in both business and the paid labor force; and

WHEREAS, each year since 1987, March has been designated Women’s History Month in our nation, and the President of the United States has proclaimed the month of March to be National Women’s History Month;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim March 2017 as

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

in Arlington County and encourage all residents to join me in honoring our history and celebrating the contributions of women.
