The Arlington Adult Day Program supports Arlington adults who need a safe and supervised environment during the day. The goal of the program is to improve quality of life and maintain independence of participants for as long as possible.

The Arlington Adult Day Program offers a variety of individualized services to meet each participant’s specific needs, including:

  • Physical activities and therapeutic recreation to maintain and improve movement and mobility
  • Mentally stimulating activities to encourage creative expression, communication, and memory
  • Social activities to encourage interaction with others and reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Health care monitoring, medication administration, and direct access to other adult services or County services
  • Nutritious and hot lunch and snacks
  • Access to podiatry, chiropractic, and occupational therapy services
  • Caregiver services include support and counseling, information and referral, and a break from daily caregiving

Socialize at a Memory Café!

Memory Cafes are designed to give people with early-stage memory loss and their family caregivers opportunities to socialize and engage in group activities such as listening to music, singing, playing games, and drawing. We welcome activity suggestions from all participants! Join us monthly for this free and engaging program.

  • 1st and 3rd Thursdays at Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th St. S., Arlington, VA 22204.
  • 2nd and 4th Thursdays at Central Library, 1015 North Quincy St., Arlington, VA 22201.

Registration recommended. By registering, you will receive event updates. All attendees must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Hours

The Arlington Adult Day Program is open Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Core program hours are 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Participants in the program agree to attend a minimum of 2 days per week.

Fees

The cost will depend on income and how you pay (e.g. private pay, Medicaid, long-term care insurance). For those who qualify, a sliding fee scale is available. Arlington Adult Day Program is a licensed Medicaid provider for those who qualify under the CCC Plus Waiver, formerly the Elderly, Disabled, and Consumer-Directed Waiver. Additionally, some longterm care insurance policies cover adult day services. Employees of Arlington County Government receive a discounted fee for family members who attend the program.

 

Participants

The Program serves individuals age 18 and older in Arlington County that need a safe and supervised environment during the day. Participants may be:

  • Experiencing memory loss
  • Physically impaired
  • In need of personal care assistance
  • Limited in independent functioning
  • Frail and require supervision during the day

 

Licensing

Arlington Adult Day Program is licensed through the Virginia Department of Social Services. It has received the maximum license possible from the state and is in excellent standing.

 

Transportation Options

We work closely with STAR Paratransit. STAR provides fully accessible shared paratransit rides for people who have difficulty riding ART’s regular fixed-route bus service due to a temporary or permanent disability.

 

 

Admissions

Prior to intake, a physical exam and tuberculosis screening must be completed on our forms. Physicals cannot be done more than 30 days before an admission date. The participant and a family member or caregiver will attend an intake appointment, which includes a tour, assessment of the participant's needs, and an opportunity to discuss questions.

 

Number of Participants

On average, 20-25 participants attend per day. We provide a 1:6 staff-to-client ratio.

 

Daily Activities

Activities vary throughout the day and week. Some activities occur everyday; including exercise, therapeutic activity groups, lunch, independent time, and snack. Three specialized therapeutic activity periods occur every day with up to 3 options available during each period. Participants also attend special events each month taking place both within and outside of the center, such as nature walks and field trips.

All Languages Welcome

All Arlington County residents are welcome to attend. To fully provide for the necessities and safety of the individual while at the Center, some communication is necessary. Notify us of non-English words the participant would use to express needs such as hunger, thirst, pain, or toileting.

We also use body language. In terms of participation in groups, many activities do not require verbal speech in order to participate.

In the event of inclement weather, call the Arlington Adult Day Program main line at 703-228-5340. Our voicemail will be updated by 6:00 a.m. if there is a closure or delayed opening.
