Licensing Process & Requirements
As a licensed Kinship Caregiver, there are additional resources and benefits available to both the child, as well as, the caregiver. See Formal vs Informal Kinship Care.
Below is the licensing process:
- Kinship Navigation and Outreach Coordinator contacts potential caregiver to evaluate their ability, willingness, and level of interest.
- Initial Kinship Assessment including Child Protective Services and criminal history checks are completed on all adult house members.
- Once eligible background checks have been returned to the Department, the Kinship Development Specialist schedules a visit to review the process and assists with the application packet and kinship training requirements.
- Kinship training is completed and a social worker is assigned to reach out to the family to complete a written home study - this is generally 3-4 home visits and takes 60 to 90 days to complete.
- Once the home study is complete, it is approved by the social worker's supervisor and reviewed for final approval.
