Requirements for Lateral Hiring

Certifications and Experience

• Hold prior certification as a firefighter/EMT
• At the time of application, two (2) years' experience as a full-time firefighter/EMT, or with a jurisdiction/agency whose primary responsibility is fire protection and emergency services. Including fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, and EMS. 
• Completed a career recruit school.
• Virginia or Pro Board firefighter I and II certification
• Hazardous Materials Operations
• Emergency Vehicle Operations Certification
• National Registry EMT

Background Investigation

• Character and background investigation
• Fingerprinting
• Panel interview
• Polygraph
• Medical evaluation
• Psychological examination.
