Swim coaches and Learn to Swim and other Aquatic Class Instructors

Arlington County is currently recruiting for several opportunities for temporary seasonal employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. This recruitment includes instructors and/or coaching staff in the popular and growing Aquatics programsThis announcement is specific to teaching or coaching Aquatics programs only if you are interested in other teaching positions you must apply for those positions as well. Arlington County Aquatics is looking for reliable, enthusiastic, positive people who can work with children of all ages. We are seeking staff for instructional classes including group and private learn to swim, diving, synchro, and water fitness. We are also seeking staff to coach within the popular county run Competitive Swim team (Arlington Aquatic Club). The instructional program serves almost 10,000 participants annually. Classes range from parent and child through adult and other aquatic activities. The Arlington Aquatic Club has over 500 participants in the year round program.   The programs are held at the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. Shifts are afternoons, evenings and weekends primarily.

The successful candidate will provide instruction/coaching in aquatics. The position will prepare curriculum and lesson plans; prepare the for each class session; and tailor instruction to student’s needs.

Major Duties:

  • Provides instruction in area of expertise
  • Prepares for class instruction and completes paperwork
  • Performs administrative functions supporting assigned class

Recreation Instructor I starts at $17.16 per hour

This position is typically assigned to beginner-level classes, or classes where less technical expertise is required to effectively instruct class participants. Participant age may play a factor in determining the appropriate level of Recreation Instructor. Employees in this classification typically have limited instructional experience, despite having experience in the area of expertise.

Recreation Instructor II starts at $20.35 per hour

This position is typically assigned intermediate, or single-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex. Participant age may play a factor in determining the appropriate level of Recreation Instructor.

Recreation Instructor III starts at $23.53 per hour

This position is typically assigned advanced-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are complex. This position may also be assigned to teach therapeutic recreation courses or sections specifically designed for participants with disabilities. Subject matter taught may necessitate additional safety considerations by the instructor. Recreation Instructor III positions are expected to have the knowledge and ability to serve as a substitute instructor for many other classes within the general area of expertise.

Minimum:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

­          Considerable technical knowledge of assigned subject matter.
­          Ability to effectively teach individuals and groups.
­          Interpersonal skills to speak in public.
­          Writing skills to compose letters and narrative reports.
­          Reading comprehension to read standard business English.
­          Problem solving skill to apply standard procedures to clearly defined problems.
­          Arithmetic skills to add, subtract, multiply, or divide numbers of 3 digits or more.

Education and Experience:

Education: Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate or the equivalent.
1200 hours of technical experience in field related to assignment, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience, or additional responsible experience may be substituted for education. Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • Current or previous involvement with a competitive swim team
  • Current or previous aquatics or swim instruction through coaching or teaching.
  • Ability to work with or experience and skills working with children of all ages
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
