Diving Classes

Below are the diving class descriptions.  Please make sure to register for the appropriate class based on the criteria below. Specific skill requirements are necessary to advance to the next level. The column on the right below indicates the skills that are introduced within each course.  All children/adults participating in the dive programs below MUST be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and be comfortable in deep water (12 feet) and be able to tread water for at least 30 seconds, they should also be comfortable jumping into deep water.


Beginning Diving (6-12 year olds)

Required Skills

Participants MUST be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and be comfortable in deep water and be able to tread water at least 30 seconds. This beginner course introduces students to diving from the side and basic springboard diving techniques.

Introduced Skills

  • Diving Safety
  • Head First entry from side of pool
  • Approach and Hurdle steps to begin dive
  • Proper diving technique from one meter board
  • Proper hand and arm and body placement for entry
  • Introduction of back dives (if able)

Intermediate Diving (8-14 year olds) 

Required Skills

Participants MUST be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and be comfortable in deep water and be able to tread water at least 30 seconds. Participants should have taken beginning diving in Arlington or have comparable skills, specifically ability to perform front dive from the one meter board successfully.

Introduced Skills

  • Diving Safety
  • Build on and refine front dive technique
  • Review back dive techniques and refine skill
  • Introduce front and back flips
  • Introduce twisting technique
  • Review and practice all dives
  • Refine techniques for all dives

Advanced Diving (9-16 year olds) 

Required Skills

Participants MUST be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and be comfortable in deep water and be able to tread water at least 30 seconds. Participants should have taken intermediate diving in Arlington or have comparable skills, specifically ability to front and back dives as well as front and back flips or have permission from the dive instructor.

Introduced Skills

  • Diving Safety
  • Review and refinement of front and back dives
  • Review and refinement of front and back flips
  • Introduce or refine remaining diving categories (reverses, inwards, twisters etc.)
  • Learn how different dives are evaluated and scored
  • Practice and learn from an experienced coach and peers

Adult Diving (13-adult) 

Required Skills

Participants MUST be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and be comfortable in deep water and be able to tread water at least 30 seconds.

Introduced Skills

  • Diving Safety
  • Head First entry from side of pool
  • Approach and Hurdle steps to begin dive
  • Proper diving technique from one meter board
  • Proper hand and arm and body placement for entry
  • Review other dives depending on skill of class
  • Practice and learn from an experienced coach and peers
