Pickleball

While Arlington County does not currently have dedicated pickleball courts, the Walter Reed Outdoor Pickleball project is underway, with construction anticipated to start in fall 2024 and and completed in spring of 2025. Visit the project page to learn more.

• Fort Scott Park - Four pickleball courts (striped on tennis courts). View schedule.
• Glebe Road Park - Four pickleball courts (two striped on tennis court #1 and two on tennis court #2). View schedule.
• Hayes Park - Four pickleball courts (striped on tennis courts). View schedule.
• Lubber Run Park - Four pickleball courts (shared with a volleyball court). View schedule.
• Marcey Road Park - Four pickleball courts (striped on tennis courts). View schedule.
• Virginia Highlands - Two pickleball courts (striped on a tennis court - hitting wall).
• Walter Reed Park - Nine pickleball courts (six striped on the tennis courts and three on the basketball court).

Hours
Courts may be used for pickleball or tennis from sunrise to sunset, except when courts are lighted. If lighted, all uses will end at 10 p.m. 

Operating hours for the multi-use outdoor courts at Walter Reed Community Center & Park align with the community center’s operating hours. Equipment and gates will be unlocked between the following hours:

• Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Sat. - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sun. - 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The courts at Walter Reed Community Center & Park will be open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on all federal/ County holidays except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.

Pickleball Rotation Play
When there are enough users on the court to warrant a wait or sign-up, DPR will use organized play where players line their paddles up on the fence (Next Up Sign). Starting on the left, the first four paddles are next in line to play when a court becomes available.

• Place your paddle in the Paddle Rack to indicate who plays next.
• The NEXT UP marker on the Paddle Rack indicates who plays the next game.
• When it’s your turn, quickly retrieve your paddle and go to the open court.
• Relinquish your court after one game to 11 with a win by two or 15 minutes if not playing a game.   
• To play another game, place your paddle in the next available slot in the Paddle Rack.
• Any player can slide the NEXT UP indicator to the next group of paddles.  
• People who want to play together may put their paddles together in the next available four slots in the Paddle Rack. You must wait until the other slots ahead of you are filled before you can play your game.

The Next Up sign is only located at Lubber Run Community Center and Walter Reed Community Center Tennis Courts. Please use the same or similar method at our other courts.

Indoor pickleball is played in the following community center gyms during designated times:

• Arlington Mill
• Carver
• Lubber Run
• Walter Reed 
• Thomas Jefferson (adults must have a membership or pay the Daily Visit Fee, which is payable at the front desk)

Pickleball at each gym is limited to certain hours to accommodate other uses. Please click on the indoor court schedule to view scheduled times and the number of courts available at the locations above. Please use the sign up sheet located within the gymnasium to rotate onto the courts.

Walter Reed Outdoor Pickleball Court Project - The purpose of this project is to convert the Walter Reed outdoor tennis courts to dedicated, single use pickleball courts.

• DPR staff presented a pickleball update to the County Board at the November 14 recessed meeting (video | presentation(PDF, 4MB) ). The presentation included an overview of the latest community engagement and next steps to move the project forward.

Arlington Outdoor Courts Assessment Project - As Arlington’s population continues to grow and sports trends change, the Department of Parks and Recreation reviews community interests and needs.

• Following an update to the County Board at the April 25 recessed meeting (video | presentation) DPR worked to restripe existing athletic courts at Fort Scott Park, Marcey Road Park, Hayes Park and Virginia Highlands Park for multi-use (tennis and pickleball) between June and September of 2023. The parks selected for restriping were informed by the Arlington Outdoor Courts Assessment Project.  

Did you know that Lubber Run and Walter Reed Community Centers offer quiet pickleball paddles and balls?  With the interest in pickleball growing every day, these centers offer this type of equipment to reduce the noise associated with pickleball.  For those interested in giving this equipment a try, please stop by the front desk and ask to sign the equipment out.
