Summer Camp Inclusion Support

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is committed to providing positive recreation experiences and opportunities for all participants with disabilities with varying support needs.

The Therapeutic Recreation (TR) office can work with participants and/or parents/guardians with selecting the recreation program that best meets your/your participant’s abilities, needs, and interests.  We will also help ensure that modifications are in place to promote an enjoyable and successful program experience. Advanced notice for any requests for modifications are welcome to give us time to arrange for any requested program modifications.

Our inclusion process is as follows:

  1. Sign up for a camp through the Registration Office or online, indicate any modifications needed at that time. Note: You can call the TR Office in advance to discuss and explore program options.
  2. Contact the TR Office to request a modification prior to the start of the program. Please keep in mind that the sooner you contact us, the better we are able to serve you.
  3. TR Programmer will assess participant’s needs and will design a modification plan.
  4. Modification plan is shared with the participant (or parent/guardian) and the camp staff.
  5. TR Programmer will monitor the modifications and work with staff, parents and participant to resolve any issues.
  6. At the end of the program, the participant (or parent/guardian) will evaluate the support they received.
Modifications include, but are not limited to:
  • Creating and sharing modification plans with staff
  • Recommending programs or transferring to a different offering to achieve a best fit for the participant
  • Conducting on-site observations upon request
  • Training and supporting instructors, staff and parent/guardians as to how to implement various supports upon request
  • Evaluating the ability of the program staff to provide support within their own staffing ratios
  • Assessing the need and availability for additional staff to lower the ratio or provide individualized support
Please note: Additional staff support is not guaranteed and is determined by staff availability, participant support need, and programmatic structure.
