ARLINGTON, Va., September 30, 2024 — The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the latest addition to its K9 team—a 1.5 year old female Labrador Retriever named Weaver. Weaver is named in memory of New York Police Department Officer Walter Edward Weaver, who heroically perished in the line of duty during the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue victims from the World Trade Center.

Weaver joins the Sheriff's Office as a bomb detection dog, with the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of the Courthouse and surrounding areas. She is certified by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and has completed rigorous training with the PennVet Working Dog Center. Weaver and her handler, Corporal Kevin McCabe, will continue additional training alongside the Arlington County Police Department to enhance their operational readiness. K9 Weaver is also trained in evidence search and search and rescue for people.

"Welcoming K9 Weaver into our team is not only a step toward further ensuring the safety of our community but also a tribute to a true hero," said Sheriff Jose Quiroz. "Officer Walter Weaver's legacy of bravery and sacrifice inspires us, and we are honored to carry that name forward."

Corporal McCabe, Weaver's handler, is excited to begin working with her, stating, "Weaver is already an outstanding detection dog, and I’m looking forward to training with her as we serve Arlington together. We are committed to maintaining the high standards expected of our K9 team."
