Arlington County Sheriff’s Office Supports Artist’s Journey

ARLINGTON, Va., August 30, 2024 — The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Mr. Khalid Bennajma, a member of the Community Readiness Unit (CRU) in the Arlington County Detention Facility (ACDF), has been using his artistic talents to bring joy and inspiration to the inside of the detention facility, for both staff and those incarcerated.

Mr. Bennajma, who recently took up painting, has been creating vibrant murals throughout the jail, transforming ordinary walls into extraordinary works of art that uplift both staff and those incarcerated alike.His latest mural features the Arlington skyline, the world, a rising sun, and other imagery that symbolizes second chances and looking forward to a brighter future. This mural, completed in just a few hours, has quickly become a centerpiece of hope and positivity within the Community Readiness Unit program.

The CRU is a voluntary program that provides individuals with opportunities to better themselves through various resources, inspirational guest speakers, and activities aimed at successful reentry into the community. The program emphasizes personal growth, accountability, and the importance of building a positive future.

Ms. Camille Watkin, Inmate Services Counselor II and CRU Program Manager, expressed her pride in Mr. Bennajma’s contributions. "Khalid’s work is a true testament to the power of creativity and its ability to foster change. Through his art, he not only beautifies our environment but also inspires his peers to look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead. His murals are a visual representation of hope, and they remind us all that everyone deserves a second chance."

Mr. Bennajma hopes to continue honing his craft upon his return to the community, with plans to share his talent with others and use art as a means to inspire and uplift. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to supporting individuals like Mr. Bennajma in their journey toward rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
