August 2022 - Three Important Changes for 2022 Car Tax Bills

2022 Car Tax Bills in the Mail – Three Important Changes

The Vehicle Personal Property bills are mailed to County residents in mid-August.  This year, if you have more than one vehicle, you may now see multiple vehicles on one "consolidated bill."  This change is part of ongoing billing improvements, which will include offering paperless billing in the near future.

In addition, the Motor Vehicle License (MVL) fee has been eliminated.  The Arlington County Board voted in April to do away with this regressive fee, which ranged from $18 for motorcycles to $33 for cars.

Also, this year’s bill lists both a vehicle value and a lower taxable value.  Rising car values led the County Board to vote unanimously to tax only 88% of a car’s 2022 value, as determined by the Commissioner of Revenue.  In Arlington County, Virginia’s Personal Property Tax Relief covers the car tax on vehicles valued at $3,000 or less.  So, if your vehicle, or all of your vehicles, fall into this category, you will not receive a car tax bill.

Vehicle personal property taxes are due October 5 each year.  Be sure to check the Customer Assessment and Payment Portal (CAPP), where users can view accounts and bills, make online payments, and sign up for email reminders. Register for CAPP today!
