Special Inspection & Pre-Construction Manual

A special inspection is required by the Building Code for material testing, installation, fabrication, erection or replacement of components and connections requiring special expertise to ensure compliance with approved construction documents and codes. Special inspections are also required for items listed in the International Building Code or pre-construction manual.

Submission Requirements

The structural engineer of record must identify components subject to special inspection by submitting the statement of special inspection application along with the building permit application and construction documents.

A statement of special inspection may be submitted online or in person at the Permit Arlington Center.

• You must complete a Statement of Special Inspection Application(PDF, 856KB) (page 53).
• You must comply with the Special Inspection & Pre-Construction Manual(PDF, 856KB) .
• While not required, major projects are encouraged to schedule a pre-construction meeting:
  • For commercial building permits, contact your assigned Structural Plan Reviewer.
  • For Land Disturbing Activity / Civil Engineering Plans, contact the Department of Environmental Services: 703-228-3629.
