We offer many types of assistance for adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues. Bilingual staff are available and all services are strictly confidential. Services include:
Outpatient Mental Health Services
Community Support Teams assist adults with serious mental illness achieve their maximum level of functioning, minimize symptoms, reduce the frequency of hospitalizations and enhance their recovery.
Mental health services include:
- Initial and ongoing assessment
- Case management
- Individual therapy
- Psychosocial-educational groups
- Family support and education
General mental health services are provided by three separate outpatient teams composed of case managers/therapists who also specialize in the following:
- Team A provides youth transition services to young adults aged 18-24.
- Team B provides limited services to clients who do not have a serious mental illness.
- Team C provides services to dually diagnosed (Mental Health and Substance Abuse) clients.
Clarendon House
Clarendon House is a community based rehabilitation program working with adults with serious mental illness. The program provides a wide array of services to clients. These include psycho-education, advocacy and case management, medication and psychiatric care, and recreational programs.

Community Support Team Services
Comprehensive, community-based mental health services for adults with mental illness to help them achieve maximum level of functioning, minimize symptoms, reduce frequency of hospitalizations and enhance their recovery.
Services include: intake and assessment, case management, crisis intervention, psychotherapy and psycho-education, and residential support. Specialized services are available for persons with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders and for young adults transitioning to the adult mental health system.
Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
CIT is an internationally known and practiced program that unites law enforcement officers, emergency dispatchers, mental health treatment providers, consumers of mental health services and other community agencies in the common goal of providing the mentally ill and individuals in crisis with options outside of incarceration. These options include connecting individuals with community resources and providing crisis stabilization. Arlington’s CIT program empowers officers with the skills to interact with mentally ill individuals and individuals in crisis safely and effectively.
Discharge Assistance & Diversion Project (Special Regional Initiative)
Helps individuals with serious mental illness leave state psychiatric hospitals and return to the community. Community placements range from highly specialized group homes to intensive supported living settings. Additionally, the program focuses on state hospital diversion which involves using state funds to purchase private beds at local psychiatric hospitals to divert individuals from state hospitals. This diversion component can also provide limited, short-term financial assistance to those requiring extra resources in order to be discharged.
Discharge Planning Services
Comprehensive assessments and discharge planning for individuals currently in state psychiatric hospitals ready for community placement in Arlington. Services ensure access to community mental health and dual diagnosis programs and helps determine the type and intensity of aftercare services necessary.
Employment Services (Job Avenue)
Assists clients with mental illnesses in obtaining and maintaining employment. Supported employment services include work preparation training, vocational assessments, job development, job placement and training and follow-along support.

Healthy Living Program
The Arlington County Healthy Living Program offers Behavioral Healthcare Division participants a variety of programs to support the development of social, physical, environmental, and emotional health and well-being.
Homeless Case Management Services – Treatment on Wheels (TOW)
Provides assessments, case management and linkages for adults with serious mental illness and/or substance abuse problems who are homeless to appropriate services and housing resources. Individuals who are homeless may receive services at local shelters and through street outreach.

Jail Diversion/Forensic Case Management
Intensive case management and assessment services for individuals with serious mental illness experiencing difficulties in the criminal justice system. Services include case management and linkages to health services, medical and other critical needs.
Mindfulness Drop-In Zoom Classes
Looking for a way to relieve stress without leaving the house? Christopher Downing teaches a daily Mindfulness Class from 12 – 12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. These classes are free, so feel free to drop-in to try it out.
Projects in Assistance for Transition from Homelessness (PATH)
PATH services are for people with serious mental illness, including those with co-occurring substance-use disorders, who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. PATH services include community-based outreach, mental health, substance abuse, case management and other support services, as well as a limited set of housing services.

Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT)
Provides intensive, comprehensive and community-based services to adults with serious mental illness. A multi-disciplinary team provides outreach, intensive case management, in-home supportive skills training, substance abuse assessment and treatment, psychiatric assessments, medication administration and monitoring, employment assistance, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, family support and collaboration and linkages to community services.

Psychiatric Services
The goal of Psychiatric Services is to provide person-centered, quality care that empowers individuals to live independently, be active members of the community, and attain their personal goals. Psychiatric Services is designed to provide integrated comprehensive health and wellness services.

Residential Services
A continuum of residential and related supportive services for adults with serious mental illness to promote successful community living.
Services include group homes, assisted living facilities, residential crisis stabilization services, intensive supported living services, transitional housing persons who are homeless and a permanent-supported independent housing program.
Transition Team Services
Assessment and short-term, intensive case management, medical support and counseling services to seriously mentally ill adults not yet linked to the long-term Behavioral Health Care Division services. This service reaches out to those not yet connected to the system. The goal is to help them receive services in a timely way.
Eligibility
Clients must have a mental health and/or substance abuse issue and be ONE of the following:
- Arlington resident
- Homeless
- Person receiving Medicaid
- Resident in Arlington facility (psychiatric hospital, jail, etc.)
All individuals reporting a mental health and/or substance issue will be screened for services.
Fees
- We use a sliding fee based on income.
- Clients with insurance are billed accordingly.
