Dead Animal Removal / Roadkill

If you would like the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) to remove a dead animal, call 703-931-9241AWLA only removes animals that may carry rabies.

Birds

Avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds or poultry and observe them from a distance. If you find a dead bird, dispose of it immediately following these safety tips:

  • Wear a hand covering, such as gloves

  • Pick up the bird the same way you would pick up pet waste:

    • Invert a bag over your hand, pick up the bird, and then pull the bag over the bird, tying with a knot at the top before disposal

  • Dispose of the bird in a waste receptacle outside of the home

  • Wash hands well after disposal

If you see any of the following, please notify the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources at 855-571-9003 or wildlifehealth@dwr.virginia.gov:

  • Five or more dead vultures, waterfowl, shorebirds, or seabirds in the same area within five days

  • Sick or dead eagles, hawks, owls, or turkeys, excluding carcasses found on the road

  • Ten or more dead wild birds of any other species in the same area within five days
