Healthcare Provider Reporting

Healthcare providers and laboratories are required to report:

  1. All patients with confirmed TB disease
  2. Anyone presumed to have TB disease
  3. Anyone diagnosed with latent TB infection (LTBI)

Presumed or confirmed active TB: Report to Arlington County Public Health immediately. If active TB disease is presumed, do not delay reporting pending identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis with a nucleic acid amplification (NAA) test or positive culture.

  • Monday–Friday (8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.): 703-228-5200, Option #1, and ask for the Nurse of the Day
  • Nights and weekends: 703-558-2222, and ask for the Public Health Duty Officer

LTBI: Submit LTBI reports within three days of diagnosis through an electronic confidential morbidity report, by submitting an LTBI case report form in an encrypted email to tuberculosis@vdh.virginia.gov, or by fax to 804-416-5178. If using the confidential morbidity report, please include additional evaluation and treatment information in the comments, including the date and results of chest imaging, additional known risk factors (e.g., HIV, TNF-alpha antagonists), and treatment regimen and dates.

Reporting is required by state law (Sections 32.1-36 and 32.1-37 of the Code of Virginia and 12 VAC 5-90-80 and 12 VAC 5-90-90 of the Board of Health Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control).
