Arlington Public Art is celebrating 40 years of public art and placemaking in Arlington. Arlington’s history of commissioning public art grounded in County planning objectives began in 1984 with the dedication of Nancy Holt’s Dark Star Park in Rosslyn, featuring a community-celebrated annual shadow alignment. August 1, 2023 at 9:32 AM, marked the 40th shadow alignment since the artwork’s inception and launched Arlington Public Art’s yearlong 40th-anniversary observance with a series of events and activations highlighting the entire collection.

Present Pastimes by Olalekan Jeyifous unveiling May 1, 2024: In conjunction with Southeastern Development Associates and Harris Teeter’s 600 N. Glebe Road redevelopment project, this two-paneled artwork reimagines a cherished venue that alludes to leisure in a pre-digital, bygone era.

In Conversation: Nekisha Durrett + Zaq Landsberg, April 27, 2024 1:00-3:00 pm will be a discussion about the rewards and challenges of public art and the complex nature of monuments and memorials. Their experiences working in Arlington will provide a foundation for the conversation. Zaq Landsberg's popular Reclining Liberty is on view at MoCA Arlington through July of 2024 and Nekisha Durrett's acclaimed Queen City was unveiled in Metropolitan Park in 2023. The event will be held at MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio + Store, 525 South 14th Street, Arlington, VA.

Compassion by Una Hanbury & Colin Poole sculpture installed December 2023: The sculpture, located at the intersection of Wilson and Clarendon Boulevards at Courthouse Road since 1969, has been remade in bronze by the artist’s grandson and will be installed by Greystar Real Estate Partners near the original location.

Arlington Art Walk Thursday, October 5, 2023, 3:00- 7:00 p.m. is an annual walkable, self-guided cultural tour that connects local galleries, artist studios, public art, and cultural events. Public Art will be presenting Linda Hesh’s Put the “I” into C_ivic sculpture at Mason Square Plaza (3551 Fairfax Drive) and an outdoor digital display showing images from Arlington’s Public Art collection on the George Mason Exhibitions screens.
