Artist: Lincoln Schatz
Materials: Plexiglas, stainless steel
Installed: 1999
Fifi is one of several Plexiglas sculptures artist Lincoln Schatz created in the late 1990s. Its sanded Plexiglas sheeting and stainless steel tubing highlight both a structural and a conceptual approach to the outdoor sculpture’s interaction with light. A highly impact-resistant and UV-stable material, Plexiglas allows for a dialogue with the sun, rather than being deteriorated by it. As the light shifts throughout the day, so does Fifi’s appearance, physically embodying the changes in the light over a 24-hour period. Prior to its permanent installation, Fifi was exhibited at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Pier Walk 98, both in Chicago.
Schatz is a graduate of Bennington College and a recipient of a Core Program fellowship at the Glassell School of Art. His work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the U.S. Department of State, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Jose Museum of Art. He lives and works in Chicago.
