The Ridge Road Bridge takes its inspiration from the Four Mile Run stream and can be seen as a pair with the West Glebe Bridge, located just a mile upstream. Four Mile Run supports a variety of wildlife species, including the Red-Tailed Hawk. The intricate pattern and elegant shape of the Red-Tailed Hawk’s wings inspired the patterning for the concrete bridge parapet barriers and the steel grills. The handrails include lighting that enhances the pedestrian experience of crossing the bridge at night. These aesthetic amenities incorporated into the rehabilitation of the Arlington Ridge Road Bridge lend it new function and beauty to serve the community for decades to come.
