Code The Curb: A Parking Data Hacking Showcase

How would you use data to make the parking experience better at metered parking spaces?

Arlington County’s Performance Parking Pilot produces 24/7 real-time parking occupancy data from close to 4,500 metered parking spaces in our commercial corridors. Price data is also available--and all of these data are accessible through the project's API. 

Join us for a data hack event! The County has partnered with Northeastern University in Arlington to host a data tool showcase where you can demonstrate what you can do with an open data feed like this.

There are a few data tools available now that can serve as examples of how visualization and data tools can improve the parking experience (ParkMobile's “Availability” layer; eXactnav app; CurbIQ website). However, we want to know what else you can do with data to make parking better for drivers and other road users in Arlington. How else can this data be used or displayed to achieve the pilot project's goals?  

We're hosting this showcase to allow all participants to introduce their work in the form of 5-minute presentations. Use this opportunity to show off your skills and creativity to a relevant peer and professional audience. This will be an afternoon of fun, networking, and nerding out over data tools for civic good. Expect kudos, questions, curiosity and constructive feedback on your work, but not prizes. All participants retain ownership of their tools.

Not a data scientist? No problem. General attendees are welcome! Join us for lunch (provided) and learning (also provided) and see what can be done with data from our parking pilot program.

Presenter Guidelines:

• Interested presenters must register by October 25, 2024 to be included in the submission process. RSVP today even if you are not sure you will submit a project!
• Both individual and group projects are welcome!
• We hope to see a wide variety of ideas/tools – small scale to large scale. Your tools may be focused on a specific neighborhood, the entire study area, or anything in between. 
• Each presenter will be given a maximum of 5 minutes to present their concept, with 1-2 minutes for questions directly after their showcase.
• Presenters should review the Performance Parking Pilot's goals and objectives, and clearly articulate a link between their project and those goals.
  • Focus on how your project makes the user experience better for people parking and/or for other road users where parking is located.
• Web-based tools are strongly recommended, but please reach out if you have questions about specific requirements for your project to be presented.
