The National Park Service has started work to restore the Netherlands Carillon, with the project scheduled to be complete in 2021.
In March 2021, the National Park Service is also scheduled to begin building a new comfort station near the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial. This work is expected to continue for 10 to 12 months.
During construction of these projects, the bicycle and pedestrian trail between the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial and the Netherland Carillon will be closed. Trail users will be routed north/south on North Meade Street using either the sidewalk or bike lanes. Users can then continue on North Marshall Drive via the multi-use path.
The trail detour is expected to be in place through March 2022.

An independent inspection of the Four Mile Run bridge connecting South Arlington Ridge Road with Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria required closing the bridge’s west sidewalk to pedestrians, due to deterioration of beams below. Vehicle traffic is not affected by this restriction.
The restriction will remain in place indefinitely as engineers monitor conditions and look at eventual replacement options.
Signage and barricades have been installed to direct pedestrians and bus riders to the bridge’s east sidewalk. Visit the newsroom for details.

A routine inspection of the bridge on West Glebe Road at South Four Mile Run has uncovered deterioration. As a result, the County has put in place a vehicle weight restriction of 5 tons for the bridge and closed the bridge sidewalks in both directions.
The 5-ton weight limit restriction primarily affects larger heavy vehicles such as buses and dump trucks. The restrictions will stay in place until further notice.
