About the WPCP
Located in south Arlington, the Water Pollution Control Plant treats 23 million gallons of wastewater each day from residences and businesses, with nearly 20% of the plant’s flow coming from neighboring localities Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. The plant’s mission is to safely and economically process wastewater and hazardous waste materials to protect the environment: especially Four Mile Run, the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Read the plant’s core values.
Group Tours of the WPCP
Scheduling a free WPCP public group tour—for a minimum of five and maximum of 20 people—may take up to four weeks for processing.
Tours are conducted March through June and again from September through December, Monday through Friday, 9-11 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. Due to safety concerns in extreme weather, tours are not conducted in January, February, July and August.
The Water Pollution Control Plant tour is two hours long: first hour in the classroom followed by an hour-long guided walk.
