Green Valley

John Robinson Jr. Town Square

Green Valley is a historically black neighborhood in south Arlington. Following the Civil War, John D. Nauck, Jr. purchased and subdivided 46 acres of land into present-day Green Valley. In 1902, the expansion of the neighborhood came to an abrupt halt when the Constitution of Virginia restricted the rights of black citizens. By 1952, much of Green Valley had been developed, and the community continued to thrive as one of the prominent (and oldest) African American communities in Arlington. Formerly known as Nauck, the neighborhood's civic association voted in 2019 to change the name of the neighborhood to Green Valley to better reflect its African American history and legacy. Community planning efforts led to the development of the John Robinson, Jr. Town Square to serve as a gathering place and the Nauck Village Center commercial area that provides a mixed-use, pedestrian friendly atmosphere along Shirlington Road.
