About the Project

This second phase of the redevelopment of Jennie Dean Park will begin with the demolition of the existing WETA studio building, the recently purchased property at 3520 S. Four Mile Run Drive, associated parking, and a portion of 27th Street South. After demolition, staff will incorporate these spaces into the park and construct the phase 2 amenities as envisioned in the Four Mile Run Valley Park Master Plan. These new amenities include additional casual use space (e.g. grass, pathways, trees, plantings, picnic areas etc.) a lighted basketball court and conversion of the existing basketball court into a second tennis court.

Project Goals:

The following project goals are based on the vision from the County Board adopted Four Mile Run Valley Park Master Plan:

  • Integrate Newly Acquired Spaces: Seamlessly incorporate the newly acquired properties into Jennie Dean Park.
  • Expand Recreational Opportunities: Enrich the recreational offerings within Jennie Dean Park by constructing a new lighted basketball court, converting the existing basketball court into a second tennis court, and creating new unprogrammed casual use space, to cater to diverse interests and activities.
  • Promote Sustainable Park Design: Foster environmental sustainability in the redevelopment of Jennie Dean Park by incorporating green design elements such as native plantings, pollinator plantings, sustainable materials, and preserving and expanding existing tree canopy.
  • Enhance Accessibility: Improve accessibility into the newly acquired properties to create a welcoming and safe environment for all community members, including those with disabilities.

Project Background

In May 2022, Arlington County reopened the newly renovated Jennie Dean Park, an integral part of the Green Valley community for more than 75 years. Building upon its history and the community’s love of sports and arts, the park has been transformed into an exciting place designed to celebrate the area’s past and cultural heritage, while increasing access to recreation and nature.

The Jennie Dean Phase 2 project will incorporate two newly acquired properties into the park and add amenities that were envisioned in the Four Mile Run Valley Park Master Plan.
