As part of 2019 repaving work, the final plan was implemented south of 13th Street North.

The section for the I-66 overpass to 13th Street North was completed in summer 2024, following the construction of Arlington Public Schools’ Education Center Reuse project. 

About the Project

As part of routine repaving work within the County, staff and community feedback developed a final preferred concept to improve multimodal safety and connectivity along North Quincy Street.

The final preferred concept includes:

• Crosswalk improvements to increase the safety of people walking, including addressing identified crash trends at 10th Street North
• Improved on-street bike facilities to enhance the safety of people biking and driving, north-south connections, regional trail access and access to schools
• Consolidated bus stops to improve efficiency of transit service and enhance pedestrian safety
• Pedestrian bump-outs where possible to shorten pedestrian crossings
• View the final preferred concept

This project complements previously completed work to create a safer corridor along N Quincy Street(PNG, 884KB):

• N Quincy Street between I-66 overpass and Route 29 – Paving and markings completed summer 2017.
• N Quincy Street between George Mason Drive and Fairfax Drive – Paving and markings completed summer 2018.
• N Quincy Street between Fairfax Drive and 13th Street North – This section is slated for the 2019 repaving season.
• N Quincy Street between 13th Street North and the I-66 overpass – This section is slated for completion, after construction for the Arlington Public Schools’ Education Center Reuse project.
• N Quincy Street between Fairfax Drive to 9th Street North – Improvements to this section are expected to occur in conjunction with Ballston-area redevelopment efforts in the next few years.

This project supports the efforts of Arlington Public Schools’ Education Center Reuse project by offering improved transit, walking and bike access to the school site. In coordination with APS and the Department of Community Planning and Housing Development, the proposed remarking options will help mitigate potential conflicts with future use around the school site.
