About the Project

This project will build upon recent improvements along North McKinley Road/North Ohio Street to provide safer connections between the W&OD Trail and McKinley Elementary School for people walking, biking, driving and riding transit.

Features of the project include shorter pedestrian crossings, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, improved trail access, and clearer intersection operation for all road users.

In early 2022 the scope of the project was expanded to include improvements to the intersection of 12th Rd N. and 11th Rd N.

Public Process

Spring 2021 - Concept Design Engagement

In Spring 2021, the project team held a virtual public meeting and hosted an online engagement form to provide information about the project background and goals, existing conditions, provide feedback on concept design and answer questions about your experience using the intersection of North Ohio Street and 12th Road North.

Spring 2022 - Revised Concept Design

In early 2022, the project team finalized a revised concept design for the intersection of N. Ohio Street and 12th Street N. that addresses the feedback we received from public engagement in 2021, as well as other input from key stakeholders, utilities and field work observations.

Because the revised concept makes substantial changes to the initial concept design, the project team hosted a virtual public information meeting on the new plans on March 22, 2022, from 7-8pm.

Fall 2022 - Project Design Update

In November of 2022, an email update was sent to project stakeholders which provided an update on design efforts and presented an updated project schedule. The project schedule was modified due to increases in scope resulting from concept refinement.

Spring 2024 - Final Design Update

In April 2024, an email update was sent to project stakeholders conveying the completion of the design phase for the project. This update also included details related to a reduction in the scope of the project due to various constraints. The correspondence also provided an updated schedule for the construction phase.

An adjacent project that came out of this engagement was a Vision Zero Quick Build Safety Project on the N. Ohio Street Bridge. Learn more about that effort on the project sheet from the Vision Zero program.

Funding

The total project cost is estimated at $1.3 million, based on the revised preliminary designs.

The project is funded through the County’s Capital Improvement Plan and made possible by funding from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. NVTA is responsible for long-range planning, prioritization and funding of regional transportation projects in Northern Virginia.
