Resurfacing Projects for Complete Streets – 2023 Season

Status: In Design

Staff reviewed the annual list of projects up for routine maintenance and identified a subset of streets for potential projects.

Project Locations

These roadway sections were open for community feedback on existing conditions in spring 2023.

About the Projects

Complete Streets “enable safe access by all user groups including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit vehicles and users, and motorists of all ages and abilities.”

Arlington County delivers on the Master Transportation Plan's Complete Streets policy by reviewing the annual list of streets up for routine maintenance and identifying those that might benefit from improvements to provide safe access for all people using the street.

What types of improvements can be made through street maintenance?

Treatments for each roadway segment will depend on existing conditions, plan guidance and community feedback.

Past improvements made through the Resurfacing for Complete Streets program include:

  • Shortening crossings for people walking through curb bump outs, medians or median extensions, and bike lanes.
  • Increasing clarity by formalizing travel lanes and adding high visibility markings, and advance signage.
  • Providing more separation between people driving and people biking through buffered or protected bike lanes.
  • Reducing vehicle speeds with pavement markings, including bike lanes or medians, curb bump outs, medians, and signage.
  • Providing better sight lines and more controlled vehicle turning movements through curb bump outs, and pedestrian islands.

About the Process

While specific project schedules may vary, this is a general timeline for these types of projects.

Fall 2023 - Existing Conditions Feedback

Level of Engagement: Involve

  • Discuss project goals and how you currently use the streets
  • Share specific ideas and concerns for the street sections

This input will be used to refine to goals and develop concept options.

Early Winter 2023/4 - Concept Design Feedback

Level of Engagement: Involve

  • Learn what we heard during Existing Conditions Feedback and how it helped inform the concept design
  • Review and share comments on concepts

Input gathered will help evaluate and refine development of a final concept.

Late Winter 2024 - Final Concept

Level of Engagement: Communicate

  • Learn what we heard during Concept Design Feedback and how it helped inform the final design
  • View final designs online

Spring 2024 - Implementation

Level of Engagement: Communicate

  • Details about construction schedule and anticipated impacts are shared
  • Resurfacing and remarking work is completed
  • Staff conduct observations to ensure each corridor is functioning as intended
