Transit ITS and Security Program

About the Program

Arlington County’s Transit Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Security Program installs and maintains technology infrastructure to improve transit operations and rider information systems, and identifies and mitigates agency security and safety issues.

The County’s ongoing initiatives focus on providing accurate and timely information to both operations staff and transit customers. This program introduces new technology and builds upon existing infrastructure.

Current Projects

Technology projects currently underway include:

  • Transit Signal Priority (TSP) implementation for better running times of buses in congested corridors, beginning with Langston Blvd— In development
  • Text-based system for real-time bus arrival information on mobile phones — In planning
  •  Optimize automatic passenger counting technology so it is accurate enough to pass federal standard for data collection – In development

Completed Projects

Implemented ITS and security projects include:

  • Real-time Delivery Preference Study – This study was conducted to fill the gap in recent market research on what Arlington transit riders want and expect in terms of real-time information delivery.
  • Real-Time Multimodal Information Display Installations include arrival information for Metrorail, Metrobus, ART bus, and Capital Bikeshare
  • Addition of ADA-accessible speaker boxes at Crystal City and Rosslyn bus bays.
  • Installation of security systems at the new ART bus facility on South Eads Street.
  • Increased the accuracy of real time bus predictions by eliminating "ghost buses" (arrival time predicts for buses that are no longer in service)

Funding

This project is included in Arlington County’s adopted Capital Improvement Plan and is funded by a mix of state, regional and local sources.
