Moved From Out of State
Virginia Vehicle Registration
If you’re moving to Arlington from out of state, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of move-in. More on registering your car in Virginia.
Virginia Driver’s License
If you’re moving to Arlington from out of state, you need to apply for a Virginia driver’s license within 60 days of move-in. Exceptions include military personnel, out-of-state students, and temporary nonresidents.
If you hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you must obtain a Virginia CDL within 30 days.

Arlington County Vehicle Registration
All vehicles regularly parked or garaged in Arlington County must be registered for personal property tax with the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office within 60 days of moving into Arlington or acquiring a vehicle that will be located in Arlington.
Owners of vehicles garaged in Arlington but displaying out-of-state license plates will be assessed a $100 annual fee.

Moved Within Virginia
Virginia Vehicle Registration
If you’re moving to Arlington from another part of Virginia, you will need to notify the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. They will need your full name, customer number, title number, and the last four digits of your VIN to update their files.

Driver’s License
If you’re moving to Arlington from another part of Virginia, you will need to notify the DMV within 30 days of your move. For no fee, you can request an address card showing your new address that you must carry with your license. As an alternative, you can purchase online or in person a new driver’s license with your new address.

Arlington County Vehicle Registration
All vehicles regularly parked or garaged in Arlington County must be registered for personal property tax with the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office within 60 days of moving into Arlington (or 60 days after acquiring a vehicle that will be located in Arlington).
After you move, be sure to close your account with the Commissioner of Revenue of your old locality. This will prevent the old locality from assessing personal property taxes on your vehicle(s).
